Did Dante want to love Beatrice?

I know their story, how Dante met Beatrice only twice, and how he beautified her as an idyllic vision of beauty in his literature. What I want to know is, did he ever want to love her, marry her, etc? Was he heartbroken when she married another man or when she died? Or was it just courtly love?
