T mobile people i have a question about roaming/using phone out of the country?

I am going to toronto next week. I'm from michigan, I use t mobile and I have a sidekick 4g ... would I get charged for just having it on? Or do I only get charged for using it? Should i put it on airplane mode to avoid charges?
